Ithemba Women’s Empowerment Programme
The Community Development Foundation Western Cape (CDF WCape) women cluster (also referred to as the Ithemba Broad-Based Ownership Trust) is a network of women-led organisations that reaches out and works in densely populated and highly contested communities and is steeped in the Care Economy. Given its strong relationships and trust built over many years, these community-based initiatives reach out and serve women, the elderly, disabled, youth and children that are either vulnerable, and or abused. Now that the Covid-19 pandemic exploded the myth of ‘previously disadvantaged communities’ and demonstrated that the poor and working-class communities are in fact perpetually disadvantaged, it’s community initiatives spearheaded by and for the community that continue to make a difference. These women leaders have earned their leadership credentials and have become the beacon of hope in their respective communities. CDF WCape’s longstanding work of building assets in local communities continue to capitalize and maximize the capacity, networking and relationships invested or built to date.
