Ithemba Women’s Empowerment Programme

Under the Auspices of CDF WCape

Women empowerment with the focus on skills training and capacity building is one of lthemba Broad-based Ownership Trust’s strategic objectives. Rebuilding of family life, community cohesion and social integration at all levels of community life will enhance opportunities and life chances. Integrated strategies to eradicate poverty include social economic development initiatives and vocational skills training with women at the core of the Ithemba Broad-based Ownership Trust.

Grim prospects and challenges facing women and children brought the idea of “integrated health and economic wellbeing for all” to the fore. With the help and support of a small group of women the holistic HEALTH AND ECONOMIC WELLBEING PROGRAMME FOR WOMEN was conceptualised and the Ithemba Broad-based Ownership Trust was established as a sustainable entity for economic empowerment of women living in deprived communities.

The following objectives underpin this scheme:

Establishing a sustainable economic hub or projects which will focus on wellness and human rights awareness; establishing places of safety for abused Black women; and economic enablement in the form of skills development, socio-economic development, and grassroots enterprise development for Black women.

By channelling funds to the grassroots steering committee, lthemba Broad-based Ownership Trust envisages to bring women as active citizens into the economic sphere, especially within the local and informal sector of economic development. This is achieved through a range of skills-based education, learning and sharing platforms, capacity building and training programmes, and the creation of networking opportunities. Skills development is followed by assisting in obtaining the necessary infra structure and where applicable; financial support to grow these women empowerment projects.

GRASSROOTS INVOLVEMENT

Interested community groups and individuals support the work of the lthemba Broad-based Ownership Trust and grants and donations received to date were specifically for women advancement and enterprise development. Anchoring the lthemba Trust is a Steering Committee consisting of a member group of concerned grassroots Black Women, created to take the holistic wellbeing initiative forward. This group of ten women was recruited for their passion, commitment and skills. They liaise and partner with woman, child and youth-focused service providers in respective communities. The lthemba Broad-based Ownership Trust with the grassroots Steering Committee as support structure is well-positioned and to play such a catalyst a role. The Ithemba Broad-based Ownership Trust works in tandem with a Steering Committee.
